SWINDON Town’s League Two play-off hopes are predicted to fall short according to the findings of FiveThirtyEight’s supercomputer.

Through the use of play-by-play data from Opta Sports, FTE anticipate Jody Morris’ side to tally up another 15 points from their remaining block of matches, finishing the season in a disappointing 10th place.

Should the findings prove accurate, Town would miss out on the play-off positions by eight points, with Saturday’s visitors Stockport County expected to take the seventh spot on 74 points.

The predictions do not show great promise for a late promotion push, with Swindon only given a 14 per cent chance of sneaking into the top seven, and for the optimists, a five per cent chance of promotion at all.

Elsewhere, league leaders Leyton Orient hold a 67 per cent likelihood to finish the season at the top, and an impressive 96 per cent chance of gaining promotion to the third tier.

Interestingly, Town find themselves third highest in the division for their ‘SPI Offensive Rating’, which represents the number of goals the side would be expected to score against an average team at a neutral site.

With a rating of 0.6, only Salford City and Mansfield Town boast higher ratings, two teams that find themselves in better league positions than Morris’ side.

However, Town’s statistics at the other end of the pitch are not as appealing, having the sixth worst defensive rating in the division according to FiveThirtyEight’s findings.

Crawley Town, managed by former Robins boss Scott Lindsey, also find themselves low in the defensive rankings, in a gloomy 23rd.

The contrast in these ratings were evident over the weekend, after Swindon’s dramatic eight goal thriller only resulted in a point for the promotion-chasing side.

The predictions illustrate just how difficult a task head coach Morris and his men have to prevent the season from fizzling out with ten games to play.

Currently eight points off Salford, who occupy the final play-off place and with a game in hand, Town will be looking to defy the odds handed to them by FiveThirtyEight’s supercomputer.
