Ian Holloway 'looking at everything' to fix Swindon Town away form

So far this season, Swindon have played three games on the road, taken one point, failed to score, and let in seven goals.

Although Holloway said that it was unfair to conflate last season and this, the record stretches back further than the summer, as Town have not won away from home since March 21, and in 18 away games across all competitions in 2026, they have five wins, three draws, and ten defeats.

After the 4-0 defeat at York City, Holloway said Swindon “have to learn how to win on the road” as their early away form contrasts with their perfect record at the Nigel Eady County Ground this term.

When discussing what had gone wrong, the Swindon manager mentioned that Swindon’s Friday training session at St George’s Park had given him cause to reconsider future travel plans.

He said: “Yesterday, travelling up and training halfway up, it was awful. They were awful, so we are going to have to look at what we do, because I hated yesterday.”

When asked what specifically had displeased him about the training, Holloway revealed that his team were completely unprepared during that session.

He said: “When you travel and you train, you get off the bus and you are a bit stiff.

“We were at a wonderful place, St George’s Park, and we couldn’t string three passes together. My coaches had to tell them, ‘Hang on, what are you doing?’

“We had to stop it because their mindset wasn’t right, so that is what I didn’t like about Friday.

“I haven’t seen that on a Friday; that is the first time that I have seen that, and I did not like them, and I told them that this morning.

“If you are not sharp enough, if you are not ready to get off the bus and do something, then there is something wrong with you, because on Friday, it is absolutely vital to be sharp, and we didn’t look like it.”

The away record has reached the point where serious changes have to be considered in order to find a way of bringing an end to their poor travelling.

Any solutions will need to be discovered quickly, as Swindon head to Salford City, who have won their last two at home, this weekend.

Holloway was asked whether the events of Friday would lead him to change the team’s normal travel plans, and he said that everything was on the table.

He said: “I’m looking at everything, because we cannot play like this away from home for two games in a row and concede seven goals.

“I have to look at every single thing that we do, but it is more about the group’s understanding of each other, the drive that they have, the mentality you come here with.

“I thought it was good, I thought we looked alright, and then we missed a couple of chances.”
