HASNEY Aljofree believes Town chairman Andrew Fitton is right to take his time over his next managerial appointment, insisting caretaker boss Dave Byrne is more than capable of steadying the ship in the meantime.

Swindon travel to Walsall this afternoon looking to haul themselves clear of the League One drop zone, but all the talk around the County Ground has been about Maurice Malpas’s successor.

A whole host of names have been linked with the vacant post, with Fitton hinting one or two candidates would “blow the supporters away”, but Aljofree says there is no need to hurry.

“It’s obviously a big decision for the board now to make the right appointment,” the Town skipper said.

“It is right for them to take their time rather than jump into something. The players understand that.

“The board have got to do their job and go about things the right way, and we as players have a job to do. We’re being paid by the club to perform.

“When we’ve lost our manager, the players are looking at each other and at the end of the day it is out fault. We didn’t perform for him.

“It’s up to us to get the results on a Saturday, which will allow the club to do the right thing off the field - to appoint the right man.”

While the supporters continue to speculate on who the next manager might be, Aljofree insists the players are fully focussed on moving up the league table.

Dave Byrne has steered the side to three consecutive 2-2 draws since the departure of Malpas, and Aljofree revealed the players are 100 per cent behind their interim boss.

“We are doing it for David Byrne,” he said. “He has taken over from Maurice and as far as the league form goes he has kept the momentum going.

“The form is good under him, and nobody is complaining.

“Sometimes as players you wonder what is around the corner, but when you have someone like Budgie in charge he keeps everything together.

“Budgie has already said he respects us all as players, he thinks we all have ability.

“The lads are giving everything for him and we’re all in it together.

“Everyone has there own opinions, but I know Budgie and he knows what he will get from me.

“Who knows what is going to happen? It’s your futures and your livelihoods at stake.

“If it is to be a new manager then you have to prove yourself all over again, and just hope you impress him.”
