DANNY Wilson insists it is a huge confidence boost to his relegation-battling side that top scorer Simon Cox will remain at the County Ground until at least the end of the season.

The transfer window closed on Monday afternoon with no late deals being made either in or out of Wiltshire, despite the manager hinting that an “audacious” offer might have tempted them to part with the 18-goal front man.

However, Cox stayed put and Wilson is hoping that the former Reading man will continue to fire the goals which keep Town away from the League One drop zone.

Wilson said: “There were no phone calls at all, which I was delighted with because normally the ones you get calls for are your best players.

“So thankfully there was no calls on that one other than the one we had a few weeks ago about Coxy.

“It’s vital (that Cox stayed) – he’s our top goalscorer so of course you want him to be here.

“And unless someone came in with a really audacious bid then he was going to be here.”

Cox has been the talk of much speculation throughout the past month, being linked with a host of Championship and Premier League sides.

However the only bid formally lodged was a £500,000 offer from a League One rival – believed to be Huddersfield – which was instantly rejected.

Chairman Andrew Fitton revealed recently that talks have already begun to extend Cox’s contract at Swindon, and Wilson believes the 21-year-old is fully committed to helping Town climb the table.

“I don’t think there’s any reason that Coxy wants to go anyway, and he’s committed himself to us so that’s fantastic,” he said.

“From a manager’s point of view you don’t want him to go because he’s the top scorer.

“And speaking to Andrew (Fitton) as well, he didn’t want him to go.

“It would have had to be something that we really couldn’t turn down.”
