SWINDON have snapped up a “top class” goalkeeper in David Lucas, according to the player’s new teammate and landlord.

The 31-year-old stopper signed a two-year deal at the County Ground on Tuesday, reuniting himself with ex-Sheffield Wednesday colleagues Jon-Paul McGovern and Lee Peacock.

McGovern and Lucas signed for the Owls at around the same time in 2004 and lived together for eight months, and as they become housemates once more, Town’s midfield playmaker is more than qualified to give the lowdown on the club’s new number one.

“We shared a flat together in Sheffield for about eight months, so he’s already been on the phone to me and will be crashing at mine down here until he gets himself sorted with a place of his own,” revealed McGovern.

“That sort of thing is always good for team bonding and hopefully it will help him settle in quickly down here.

“David is a top-class keeper to be fair. He’s one of the best I’ve ever worked with and in the season that we won promotion with Sheffield Wednesday he was different class.

“He’s pretty loud and quite purposeful in what he does. He comes to get the crosses as well and is a good all-round keeper.

“Off the pitch he is a good guy and will fit in quite well in the dressing room too because he is a nice lad who is up for the banter.”

McGovern has just returned from a trip to Las Vegas with Town skipper Hasney Aljofree and former colleagues Michael Pook and Kaid Mohamed, before jetting out to Tenerife earlier this week.

But the midfielder has also been putting in the hours at the gym to ensure he is in top shape when the players return to training at the end of the month.

“I’ve been in the gym doing a bit of work and want to hit the ground running when we get back,” said the Scot.

“It is an important year for me, not only because I am out of contract next summer, but because you want an opportunity to try and impress the manager.

“When I played last season I thought I did quite well, so I want to be as fit as I can be for pre-season and hopefully be even better next year.”
