IT’S been a long chase spanning more than a year and two different clubs, but Danny Wilson has finally got his man.

Town’s boss landed defender Scott Cuthbert over the weekend to further strengthen his back line ahead of their forthcoming League One season.

Wilson revealed he fought off a number of Scottish Premier League and Championship teams to the 22-year-old’s signature, and believes his persistence paid off.

“I’d been tracking him for a good 12 months now anyway – I’ve known about the boy for a long time, even when I was at Hartlepool,” said the manager.

“It was important that I kept on pursuing it because I knew he is going to be a very good player.

“We got in front of lots of clubs – and I mean lots of clubs. So to get somebody of his calibre from a club like Celtic says a lot about Swindon Town.

“We’ve been in touch all the time, through his agent and I also met Scott on a couple of occasions just to have a chat with him. I think that’s helped a great deal.”

Cuthbert has performed for Scotland at under 17, under 19, under 21 and B level, and his new manager reckons it is only a matter of time before he receives full international recognition.

“Scott has got a great career in front of him in my opinion,” insisted Wilson, who has also taken triallist striker Cherno Samba to Austria.

“He’s just breaking into the full Scotland squad. He played for the B team and is now on the brink of the full side. It’s great that we can attract someone of that calibre.

“He will bring pace, enthusiasm, and a commitment that we expect from defenders. He’s a very tough boy and a good, strong defender, and he will be a fantastic acquisition for us.”
