DANNY Wilson believes Town will see the full benefit of a rested and revitalised Billy Paynter, as the boss hailed his striker's “fantastic” two-goal display.

In his first start for more than a month, Paynter netted twice in the opening 45 minutes to set Swindon on their way to a 4-1 victory away at struggling Tranmere Rovers.

Wilson insists he was right to give the front man a spell on the substitutes' bench following an intense start to the campaign, and tipped the front man to build on his impressive showing at Prenton Park.

“Billy was fantastic,” admitted the manager. “He has taken on board what we've asked him to do and has shown a great attitude. He's never shown anything but that.

“Billy's been out of the side for a few games and maybe that helped him. It might have given him a renewed appetite.

“He's a cracking boy. He wants to play every week but doesn't let his disappointment show and when he gets on the training ground he's exactly the same.

“It just goes to prove that when he's on top of his game, and when we can put balls in the right areas, then he will get goals.

“And if he continues to do what he did today then it could be very hard for anybody to stop him.”

Paynter is Town's top scorer this season with six goals to his name in all competitions, but Wilson stood by his decision to rest the former Hull City man.

“With the players we've got at the club, if people aren't scoring goals then others deserve a chance, and there's nothing wrong with that,” he told the Advertiser.

“It keeps the spark there and keeps the boys on their toes.

“You've just seen what can happen to a player who's feeling a little bit disappointed. He comes back with a bit more verve, a bit more vigour and a bit more enthusiasm.

“Billy's got himself in great areas today, he's done well and done what all good strikers do.

“With this result we've proved what we are capable of doing and it will be a big lift for everybody – the players in particular.

“We've had a few situations this season where we should have scored goals like we did today and we haven't taken them. But today will be a big, big lift for them.”
