Purton Reserves, bottom of the Wilts Premier Division, turned the form book upside down when they defeated high flyers AFC Trowbridge 1-0 at the Red House, writes RAY BURROUGHS.

Assistant boss Ray Wakely, who together with manager Clive Fuller took over the reins last weekend, was delighted with the victory.

He said: "It was a great battling performance. Clive has been busy recruiting players and there were quite a few new faces in the line up."

A first-half free-kick from Ben Hinson found its way into the net to give the home side an interval lead.

Some stubborn defending coupled with some missed chances by the visitors resulted in a great result for the Red House. It was the bottom club's third win of the season.

There was a cracking match at Southbrook where Westside were held to a 1-1 draw by visitors Aldbourne.

After a pretty even first half the home side took the lead when striker Geoff Swatton was brought down in the box and Dave Rendle scored from the spot.

Aldbourne fought back and their pressure paid off when Carl Taylor netted following a goalmouth scramble.

Play then switched from end to end for the remainder of the game, Aldbourne keeper Darryl Smith making a couple of good saves and his Aldbourne counterpart doing likewise, and both sides had to be content with a point.

Aldbourne boss Tony Dyer said: "That was a great advertisement for Wilts League football. It was exciting, plenty of goalmouth action and both sides were flat out, it was an excellent game.

"From my point of view the new players we brought in did well and I thought our keeper was outstanding. I though the penalty was a bit harsh but apart from that I was pleased with the point."

Westside boss Joe O'Rourke agreed that a draw was a fair result but added: "It was a shame we couldn't have got one of our late goals."

New College turned in a better performance to share the points with visitors Marlborough in a 1-1 draw. Ashley Chapman gave College an interval lead, netting midway through the first half and the visitors got back on level terms with t 10 minutes to go with a strike from Ryan Banks.

Bottom-but-one side Mamesbury Vics suffered a cruel blow at home to Melksham Town, the visitors scoring the only goal with two minutes to go courtesy of Gary Higdon.

Corsham moved to within a point of leaders Down Ampney following their 6-0 win over Shrewton Jason Walsh netting a hat-trick with further goals from Rob Humphries, Ross Hall and Scott Evans.

Warminster moved into fifth spot with games in hand after their 5-0 win at Pewsey Vale, and Bromham came out on top 3-2 in the local derby with Devizes Town, Daniel Sloan scored twice in the first half for Devizes with Craig Manley doing likewise for Bromham. Tom Slater scored the winner with a 30-yard volley.

Premier leaders Down Ampney were in action in the Corsham Print Senior Cup beating Westbury United in a penalty shoot-out after the side were level on a goal apiece after extra time.

Terry Moore netted for Ampney and Mark Lanfear for the home side.

Wroughton continue to lead the way in Junior Division One but had to work hard to overcome Barron Heating 2-0, both goals coming from Lee Curtis.

Pinehurst Olive Branch recovered from last week's set back to pick up three valuable points at Marlborough beating the home side 1-0 thanks to a strike from Liam Preedy.

In the all-Stratton clash AFC Stratton beat bottom club Lower Stratton 2-0 Wayne Petrie scoring both goals in the second half.

Two goals from John Le Strange enabled Blunsdon United to run out 2-1 winners over visitors Stratton Rovers Danny Wilcox on target for the Rovers.

Swindon Asians gained a 3-1 victory over visitors Castle Combe, Kamal Miah (2) and McCallum for the home side and Chris Yeo for the visitors.

Westlecott United were beaten 2-1 at home by Abbey Rodbourne, Matt Bown and Nathan Shepherd netting for Abbey.

The match official for the Junior Two game between Aldbourne Reserves and Westside Reserves failed to appear. Visitors Westside sportingly agreed to go ahead with the match with the home side's player-manager Darryl Mason taking the whistle.

Midway through the second half Paul Blackford was subbed and he took over as ref and the player manager came on to score two goals in his side's 8-1 win. James Cornfield (3), Steve Titchener (2) and Matt Fryer the other scorers.

Chiseldon Castrol remain unbeaten following their 4-0 win over Westlecot Reserves. Graham Prictor, Seth Palmer, Paul Aust and David Gee on target.

Bromham Reserves beat CHQ 3-1 to register 13 points from their last five games, Derek Thompson, Jack Fisher and Chris Rogers the scorers.

Blunsdon United Reserves gained a 5-2 away win over QT Swindon, Paul Jones and Luke Hambridge scoring two each with Paul Braithwaite netting a fifth. Purton A also won 5-2 at Wroughton thanks to a hat-trick from John Horgan and goals from Mark Cutter and Kevin Wicks.

Blueprint scored six without reply against Stratton Rovers Reserves.
