JON-PAUL McGovern has urged his Town teammates to stamp their authority on the League One play-off final tomorrow, insisting they cannot “play into Millwall’s hands” again.

When the sides met on the final day of the regular season earlier this month, the Lions ran out 3-2 winners and dominated proceedings for large spells.

McGovern was disappointed with Swindon’s performance on that afternoon, and now as the sides go head to head again - this time for a place in the Championship - the midfielder believes they should get back to what they do best.

“Maybe at their place we played into their hands a little bit,” he told the Advertiser.

“We never got on the ball and we didn’t do the things which we are good at.

“It’s important that we stamp our authority on the game early doors on Saturday and show everybody what a good passing side we are.

“It doesn’t matter if Millwall put pressure on us, we still need to be concentrating on taking the ball and doing the right things in the right areas.

“They are physical, so for us we need to get the ball down, pass it around and make little triangles to pull them apart.

“I don’t see why we can’t win it. It’s going to be almost like a cup tie, a big game for us, but we are confident in the dressing room that we’ve got enough.

“There’s some fantastic players here who have done really well all year and gone under the radar a lot all season.

“Everyone talks about Billy (Paynter) and Charlie (Austin) and the goals they have scored, but as a team it has been fantastic and a lot of that is down to the manager and his assistant.”

Despite starting the season on the fringes of the squad, McGovern established himself in Town’s starting line-up in August and has gone on to be a key player in their promotion push.

But the 29-year-old would swap all those appearances if he could be the man to fire Swindon back into the second tier.

“I don’t know how many games I have actually played – it must be around the 54 or 55 mark,” he said.

“If you had told me that at the start of the season then I would have bitten your hand off.

“For me it’s been fantastic and a great season, but to be honest I would swap it all for one game at Wembley where I score the winner to get us up. I would swap it all for the winner’s medal and the champagne.”
