TOWN boss Danny Wilson has urged Jon-Paul McGovern to get in amongst the goals on a regular basis.

The midfielder came off the bench on Saturday at Yeovil to net an 88th-minute equaliser and spare Swindon’s blushes as they came from 3-1 down to salvage a point in Somerset.

It was McGovern’s second goal of the campaign, and only his ninth in nearly 150 appearances for the County Ground club - a statistic Wilson wants to see improved.

“It was a terrific finish and he (McGovern) should do more of that, because that’s what he’s got in his locker,” said the manager ahead of tonight’s home game against Charlton.

“He wants to be more of a supplier and a boy who is creating chances to other people, but he can score goals.

“And that’s why we want him more positive and more offensive.

“When he was playing (in midfield) in the three we felt we didn’t get enough of that. But he can release himself and do things like that, and it will be a massive boost for him.”

Swindon last kept a clean sheet on September 25 against Huddersfield, and having built last season’s promotion push on a solid defence, Wilson is determined to get back to their stubborn best as soon as possible.

“We’ve got to do better,” he said. When you’re alongside somebody and you’re looking at your mate, your colleague, you’ve got to trust them. And that is what will get us clean sheets.

“If we can make ourselves very difficult to be broken down then we will win games - we know that.

“A clean sheet on Tuesday will win us the game because we will create chances and score goals. We’ve got players in the team who we know can create.

“There are six players in front of the back four who can all score a goal and win a game for us.

“The back four need to just think ‘right, that’s it, let’s make sure we keep a clean sheet’. That’s the mentality we’ve got to get.”
