JON-Paul McGovern is expected to be the next Swindon player to make the move away from the County Ground, but former Town boss Danny Wilson has ruled out taking the midfielder to Sheffied United.

Reports in Yorkshire earlier this week had suggested the Scot was to hook up with Wilson once again after he was recently spotted in Sheffield.

It is understood that Wilson is having to work within strict financial constraints following the Blades' relegation from the Championship and may need to move players on before bringing others in.

And while he did not deny that he had shown interest in McGovern, he confirmed that the 30-year-old will not be heading to Bramall Lane.

“There has been a lot of speculation but it won't happen,” he said. “We have been approached by agents regarding a number of players.”

Regarding future incomings, Wilson added: “We will make some provisions as soon as people are leaving.”

McGovern is instead expected to head further north to join Carlisle United, and a move to the League One side could be completed within the next 24 hours.

Cumbrians boss Gregg Abbott was yesterday non committal over whether McGovern was a target, stating only that he 'has a huge list of targets'.

While McGovern may not be heading to Sheffield United, Lecsinel Jean-Francois almost certainly is with the Haiti international expected to complete a move to the Blades at the start of next week.

Town boss Paolo Di Canio had been keen to keep hold of the defender and he was one of four players offered a new deal by the club at the end of the season, but interim chairman Jeremy Wray confirmed earlier this week that he was likely to move elsewhere.

Lecsinel was brought to the County Ground by Wilson two years ago after impressing in a reserve fixture against Swansea City.

He went on to make over 50 appearances for Town, although struggled to force his way into the reckoning under Wilson last season before playing a more prominent role towards the end of the campaign under Paul Hart.

Robins boss Paolo Di Canio is already looking to bring an Italian centre-half to SN1 but Lecsinel's departure could give him more leeway to bring in additional cover at the back.

Town chief executive Nick Watkins, meanwhile, has moved to allay fans concerns regarding Di Canio's protracted absence from the County Ground.

The Italian has been back in his home country speaking with potential signings, as well as finalising Town's pre-season tour of Italy.

“I am conscious that some fans are questioning Paolo’s absence from The County Ground but any such concerns are unfounded,” he said.

“Paolo and his team are working very hard in Italy and being very attentive to the needs of the club. Paolo has been very active sorting out the pre-season training camp in Italy where the players will be in residence from July 4th to July 14th.  “He has also been active assessing players and discussing terms with a number of targets that he has identified in Europe with the hope of bringing them to The County Ground.

“If you were to scan most clubs you would find that the managers are not in full time residence and will not be so until the full pre-season training schedules get underway towards the end of June.

“It is the one opportunity that they have to be away from the day to day club environment before the 10-month onslaught of another season.

“Paolo does not need to be here full-time until the last week of June.”
