ALISON Fail and Chris Mitchell, both from Purton, plus Wanborough’s Deanne Davis, who made her Johns Trophy debut for Wiltshire only a month ago, have all qualified for the county national singles quarter-finals at Wroughton today.

The trio, plus Fizz Mace (North Wilts), all came through the national singles third round in the northern section on Monday night.

Fail accounted for Anne Greenland (Chippenham Park), Mitchell beat Lucy Smith (Wootton Bassett), while Davis eliminated youngster Kara Little (Chippenham Town).

Mace came through against another Wootton Bassett youngster, Maisie Daniell.

They will be joined in the last eight by the four qualifiers from the southern section of the county ladies singles last Monday evening - Janice Bull (Amesbury), Sue Ochyra (Devizes) and Box duo Karen Funnell and Jean Collier.

The four quarter-final morning winners will move forward to the afternoon semi-finals, with the two winners booking a place in the county ladies singles final next Saturday, July 25 at Devizes and earning the right to represent Wiltshire in the main women’s championship event, ladies singles, at the national championships at Royal Leamington Spa next month.

WOOTTON Bassett Ladies section supply three of the four semi-finalists in the county U25 junior singles also at Wroughton today at 10.15am.

They are the Smith sisters, Lucy and Katy, who are kept apart in the draw and joined by team-mate Charlotte Daniell, while Chippenham Town’s Kara Little is the fourth semi-finalist.

Lucy Smith, 20, who won the title last year with a 21-15 win over Joanna Richman (Highworth), has lifted the victor’s trophy three times in the past four seasons.

WILTSHIRE’S ladies team are enjoying a fine run of form in the South West Counties League and are unbeaten after four matches.

The latest success was an eight-shot success over Herefordshire (120-112).

Big wins were recorded by the rinks of Stratton Churchway’s Janet Willis (27-11), Devizes’ Sue Ochyra (27-13) and Mo Woolley (22-15), while Janice Bull’s foursome drew 19-19.

Wiltshire Ladies’ hopes of qualifying for the last four of the Walker Cup at the national championships ended in the west regional final on Sunday at Winscombe (Somerset).

They lost out to Somerset in the regional semi-final going down 40-37.

RESULTS

Rink 1: Alison Fail (Purton), Margaret Annetts (Salisbury), Sue Cooke & Alex Jacobs (both Box) beat Kate Herbison, Marilyn Gozna, Laura Holden & Jill Young 20-17.

Rink 2: Jean Collier (Box), Wendy Anderson (Stratton Churchway), Sue Ochyra (Devizes) & Linda Kingston (Highworth) lost to Rebecca McMillan, Judith Staunton, Margaret Dyer & Stef Branfield 17-23.

Score: Wiltshire lost to Somerset 37-40.

SWINDON & District Women’s Bowls Association recorded their third win of the season last week away at Gillingham, winning 117-106 victory against Dorset.

There were wins for the rinks skipped by Haydon Wick’s Eileen Oliver 25-13, Swindon’s Alison White 27-19, Wanborough’s Carol Woodbridge 20-15 and Westlecot’s Linda Perfitt 18-16.

This weekend the S&D Women are on their annual tour to Bournemouth.
