DEANNE Davis, from Wanborough, and 2015 champion and 2016 runner-up Jean Collier (Box) have claimed the two places in the ladies singles to represent Wiltshire at the ladies national championships at Royal Leamington Spa next month.

The pair emerged from the quarter and semi-finals at Rodbourne Cheney last Saturday and will contest the final at Alderbury on July 29.

Davis becomes the first player from the Wanborough club, which only opened in 2000, to reach the county ladies final in one of the four major events – singles, pairs, triples and fours.

RESULTS

SINGLES - Quarter-finals at Rodbourne Cheney: Viv Baskerville (Chippenham Town) beat Joan Coleman (Amesbury) 21-10; Linda Young (Highworth) lost to Deanne Davis (Wanborough) 17-21; Jean Collier (Box) beat Kathryn Yeoman (Box) 21-17; Laura Laytham (Swindon Town Gardens) beat Michele Williams (Box) 21-20.

ROYAL Wootton Bassett, skipped by Pat Edmonds, a foursome from Wanborough led by Jean Crepaz, a four from Wroughton, skipped by Margaret Dowthwaite, and a quartet from Supermarine led by Pat Jones all qualified for the north area quarter-finals of the new Over 55s Fours (Senior Fours) competition due to be played last night.

The area semi-finals in both the north and south will be played next Monday with the winners at each due to meet in the final at Purton on July 22.

COUNTY selectors have named the teams for the final Johns Trophy group match against Somerset and the regional final in the Walker Cup double rinks competition.

Despite the narrow 104-102 Johns win over Cornwall the selectors make five player changes to the losing rinks that were led by Margaret Annetts, Kathryn Yeoman and Delia Godwin and a few positional switches also.

The five new players brought in are Stratton Churchway’s vastly experienced former national champion Wendy Anderson, Linda Young (Highworth), as well as Box duo Carol Grenfell and Jean Collier pus Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts).

This quintet replace Charlotte Daniell (Royal Wootton Bassett), Laura Laytham (Town Gardens) Bev Lilley (Devizes), Dawn Toomer (Wilton) and Mo Woolley (Alderbury).

It is a vital match that Wiltshire must win against Somerset at Clevedon today (Saturday) if they are to have any chance of upstaging their west country rivals for top spot in the group and qualifying for the Johns Trophy quarter-finals.

Same again is the decision for the Walker Cup regional final due to be played at Victoria BC (Weston-Super-Mare) on Sunday week (July 16).

The selectors have opted for the same eight players - including Purton duo Chris Mitchell and Alison Fail - that beat Gloucestershire by four shots in a 49-45 victory at Devizes to qualify for the west regional final.

Wiltshire will play Herefordshire in the morning semi-finals and if successful would meet either Somerset or Cornwall in the west final in the afternoon with a place in the last four at the national championships at Royal Leamington Spa in August the prize for the winner.
