SMITH SISTERS from the Westlecot indoor club Lucy 23 and Katy 22, have reached the national championships at Nottingham at the end of March having won the Area 14 section of the ladies pairs competition.

They defeated comfortably 23-6 in the area pairs final, the Whiteknights, Reading partnership of Anne Byles and Cheryl Colby at the neutral venue of Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) on Wednesday evening.

It is the third year in a row that they have won the Area 14 ladies pairs title and qualified for the last 16 and national finals.

In the 2017/18 season they went as far as the last eight (quarter-finals) before going out to Swale, Kent on the last end 19-17.

Two years ago Katy won the junior (under 25) singles title beating Lucy in the final and last season outdoors they were losing finalists in the under 25 pairs championship final at Royal Leamington Spa.

Katy followed up her indoor area pairs success with Lucy by booking a place at Nottingham next month when winning on Thursday night at Oxford City & County the Area 14 two bowl singles title.

She beat Whiteknights’ Morgan Merryweather 21-12 who had a few days earlier won the ladies singles beating England senior international Katherine Hawkes (Banbury) 21-20 to qualify for Nottingham.

Neil Smith was hoping to complete a Smith family treble as he was due to contest the area 14 men’s pairs final against Michael Knight and Robert Newman from Whiteknights (Reading) but the result is still awaited.
