WALCOT Boxing Club finished the season on a high note with two victories at the Barton Hill BC event – the final fixture of Walcot’s busy season, writes Dave Veysey.

Leading the way for the central Swindon club was light-welterweight Said Eltuyev, who put on a classy performance to beat Ryan Whelan from Nechells Green BC in Birmingham over four two-minute rounds.

The result was never in doubt, as the 17-year-old scored with a variety of well-directed and well-timed shots.

Whelan bravely kept firing back, but the former schoolboy champion boxed brilliantly on the counter – evading the onrushing Midlander and then scoring with fast left hooks and uppercuts as Eltuyev took a unanimous points’ decision by the ringside judges.

Johnny McDonagh completed the Walcot win double with a hard-fought success over Anton Esson from the Baker Street gym in Gloucester.

The 14-year-old controlled the opening round, moving well behind a tight guard and landing with left hooks and straight rights against his southpaw opponent.

However, the Baker Street boxer grew in confidence as the bout progressed, and began to score with southpaw straight lefts.

The Walcot boxer was still well ahead going into the final round, where Esson piled on the pressure to enjoy his best spell of the fight.

Despite taking some heavy shots in the dying seconds of the bout McDonagh held on to win by a split points’ verdict.

Thirteen-year-old Nigel Harris was unable to emulate his clubmates’ success, going down to James Sharpe from the host club by a unanimous points’ decision.
