Penhill ABC took a group to Ireland to box in a charity event.

The trip, to Taghmon, just outside Wexford, was arranged with the help of Liam Walsh and Frances Keeling, both coaches at the I Bars boxing club, with ties to the Swindon outfit.

First up for Penhill was Simon Knowles Jnr (36kg) against Damien Murphy from Sacre Coeur ABC, the Swindon fighter sealing a unanimous points decision after a performance of cleverness and composure.

Penhill's second winner was Adam Goddard (62kg) who boxed Joshua Graham of Arklow.

Goddard, who was giving away four kilos and eight inches in height, kept the fight at close range, unleashing combination punches to head and body, not allowing his opponent to settle and claiming a unanimous decision and also the best away boxer of the night accolade.

Making his ring debut, Luvson D'Costa (57kg) disposed of Jason Coughlan, from Kilkenny, on a majority decision, boxing behind a good left hand.

Louis Trinder (47kg) totally outboxed Wexford's James White in the first round, giving his opponent a standing count and straight combination punches in the second forced the referee to save the Irish boy from further punishment.

Daniel Harris (77kg) lost an unlucky majority decision to T Sludds, of Wexford, despite sending his opponent to the canvas in the third round.

Last up, Kelvin Young, (76kg) was edged out in a majority decision by Pole Andre Solodra, from Wexford, after a fight in which both exchanged shots.

Assistant coach Simon Knowles said: "It has been a brilliant experience for all our boys.

"To get four winners out of six in Ireland is a great achievement and all credit goes out to the lads."

"I believe that all the boys will put Penhill Amateur Boxing club back on the map.

"A special thank you must go to Bobby Gwynne for his contacts in Ireland and the help of our secretary Josie Spruce, as well as to Liam Walsh and Frances Keeling. who made our stay in Ireland very welcoming.

"We were even interviewed on the Wexford South East radio station."

The Penhill club are in Cardiff tonight with five of their number boxing in front of top boxing celebrities such as Joe Calzaghe, Enzo Maccarinelli, Nicky Piper and Colin Jones.
