Walcot ABC will enjoy another great day in their history when two of their young stars compete in the national schools final in Mansfield this afternoon, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

Patrick McDonagh, 15, will be looking to win his second national title when he meets Anthony Beckett from Kirby ABC in Liverpool at Class 3 (60kgs).

Clubmate Said Eltuyev,13, takes on Morgan Boseley from the Far Cotton gym in Northampton at Class 2, (42kgs) in what will be his first national final.

England Schoolboy international McDonagh looked good in defeating London champion Zak Chelli in the semi final, and is looking forward to the chance to win a major title.

He said: “I don’t know much about Beckett apart from the fact he is the northern champion, but training has gone well and I feel ready to face anybody.

“I have been sparring lots of older Walcot boxers, including my brother Tommy, and this has been very useful.

“I must thank all the Walcot coaches for helping me this season, especially Harry Scott who is in the gym every night. I hope to reward the coaches with back to back schoolboy titles.”

Today’s final will be Said Eltuyev’s first taste of the big time, but he has stylishly beaten three opponents in as many weeks with a combination of fast punches and nimble footwork to reach this stage.

He said: “I am looking forward to representing Walcot in the national final. I don’t know anything about my opponent but I shall follow the instruction given to me by the coaches and take it from there.”

Veteran Walcot Coach Harry Scott added: “These two lads have trained hard and deserve their chance, and if they both box to their potential they have a great chance of winning.”

The winners from today’s tough finals will be guaranteed an England vest at the Three Nations Championship against Scotland and Wales at the end of the season.

The boxing starts at 1.30pm at the Lindhurst Rooms at Mansfield Civic Centre.
