THE junior ABA semi-finals in Surrey last Sunday proved a bridge too far for Walcot's boxers, with all three teenagers losing on points to their London area counterparts, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

Former four-time national junior champion Ryan Martin faced reigning champion Luke Saunders from West Ham ABC in one of the best contests of the day.

This class six (67kg) bout ebbed and flowed over the first two rounds, with Saunders attacking with southpaw jabs and straight lefts, while Martin countered with heavy left hooks and straight rights.

Gradually, the talented Londoner increased his work rate and improved his accuracy to record a unanimous points decision.

Former schoolboy champion Connor Wells met England junior international Tom Beaney (West Ham) in his class six (63.5kg) contest.

Despite having been out of the ring for over a year due to injury, Connor performed well throughout the four rounds.

However, some dubious scoring by the local judges meant few of the Walcot boy's blows registered, and the Londoner won with a unanimous points verdict.

The inexperienced John Luke Bolton found himself in at the deep end against London champion Jack Brooker of Northolt ABC in their class four (54kg) clash.

From the outset Brooker's greater experience saw him control the contest, with the Swindonian only enjoying occasional success.

Brooker also had a height and reach advantage, which allowed him to score with fast left jabs throughout the three rounds.

But this was a gritty display by the Commonweal pupil, who bravely held on to hear the final bell and lose on a unanimous points decision.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott was philosophical afterwards, saying: “Today my three boxers took on the best in the country at their weights and they gave their all.

“Ryan matched Saunders for much of their bout, Connor's shots didn't appear to be scored by the judges, whilst John Luke was as brave as a lion.

“We will get back in the gym and come back stronger next year.”
