ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town were unable to halt their losing run in the Hellenic League Premier Division despite a much-improved display at home to Flackwell Heath.

Rich Hunter’s side ran fifth-placed Flackwell close for much of the afternoon at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, only to fall to a 2-0 defeat.

Come the final whistle, it was the visitors’ clinical finishing that proved the difference between the teams as they punished Bassett for a pair of unfortunate errors in a game that was short on chances at either end.

Francis Amartey gave Flackwell the lead in the first half when he cut inside and, taking advantage of a slip, curled a low left-foot drive from 20 yards beyond home keeper Dan Lawrence at his near post.

The visitors got their second goal just two minutes into the second period when a loose pass from Tony Joyce fell short of its intended target, Gio Wrona, and was seized upon by Dean Allen to play a through ball for the overlapping Charlie Samuel, who buried a powerful shot into the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Highworth Town saw their lead at the top of the table cut to three points following another weekend without a fixture for Jeff Roberts’ side as a thumping 8-0 win for Thatcham Town at home to Lydney Town moved them hot on the leaders’ heels.

Fairford Town’s proposed trip to Brackley Town Saints was postponed due to the wet weather.

Shrivenham’s home game against Tytherington Rocks in Division One West also fell by the wayside.
