ROHAN MacDonald won two gold medals at the U10s Regional Championships.

Competing in both the foil and epee, MacDonald, who was fencing against players from from Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, was in fine form all day.

Starting in the foil, the Prior Park pupil, had a bye in the first round before winning his last 32 match 10-4.

In the last 16, MacDonald, who competes for Swindon Fencing Club, won 10-5 before easing through his quarter-final match 10-4.

MacDonald had a much closer match in the semi-final with the two fencers locked at 7-7, however, MacDonald went on to claim a 10-7 success.

Clubmates Jacob Dawson and Oliver Brookes both reached the quarter-finals where they faced each other with the former edging through 10-8.

Dawson was then beaten in the semi-final, however, his vanquisher was no match with MacDonald.

After the foil final, the epee pool matches took place and MacDonald won five of his six matches to be seeded third and book his place in the last 16.

MacDonald cruised into the quarter-finals with a 10-1 victory and he won his last eight contest with seven points to spare.

In the last four, MacDonald went through to his second final of the day with an 8-6 win.

The final was a nip and tuck affair with the Prior Park youngster holding on for a 9-8 victory to secure another gold medal.

“I had a great day’s fencing though I was rather tired. I’m really pleased to have won two golds,” MacDonald said.

Coach Neil Bromley added: “Rohan has been putting in a lot of hard work during his lessons.

“He concentrates and applies what he learns quickly -I am hugely proud of his success.

“To have Jacob and Oliver hot on his heels, fencing at Prior Park is looking very good.”

Prior Park headmaster Guy Barrett said: “We are thrilled with these latest fencing results.

“The boys have shown great talent for sword fencing and we are pleased to be supporting them pursuing their passion.”
