ROYAL Wootton Bassett Otters Swimming Club member Alex D’Onofrio enjoyed incredible success at the recent County Youth Swimming Championships, claiming 10 medals in total.

As well as the plethora of awards hanging from his neck, the youngster scooped the fastest time on record in his age group for 100m fly in Wiltshire – the sixth quickest time in the UK.

The rest of his Otters team-mates also enjoyed success at the county meet, collecting nine medals from their 24 qualifiers.

In total, the young Otters team claimed three gold medals, six silver and 10 bronze as a record number of Bassett swimmers competed.

But D’Onofrio was head and shoulders above the rest and also recently earned a scholarship at the prestigious Mount Kelly School in Tavistock, Devon, where he will start in September.

Mount Kelly has developed over 60 international swimmers since 2000 and produced an impressive list of elite Olympians such as Sharon Davies and Lauren Steadman.

Alex’s parents, Gio and Sam, said: “We are very proud of all the hard work he has put in and we’ll always be grateful to everyone at the club.

“We know how much effort goes in behind the scenes to enable the swimmers to achieve this level of success.”

Meanwhile, Alex’s coaches Mark and Paul, said: “We’re thrilled that Alex has done so well and wish him all the best for the future.

“His journey shows how swimming talent can be nurtured to follow a successful path to competitive swimming with RWB Otters.

“We’re extremely proud of the achievements of all of our swimmers and look forward to more success later in the year.”

Alex will remain part of RWB Otters and return for training during holidays, with the club wishing him all the best for his future.
