FOLLOWING their victory in the girls’ football final earlier this year, Five Lanes Primary School climbed to the top of the Wiltshire School Games medal table by becoming county High 5 netball champions.

Having qualified from their respective local rounds, 12 primary schools from across Wiltshire travelled to Devizes School to compete in this year’s event.

The standard of play was high and every team played with passion and enthusiasm, while showing respect for their opponents.

After some close matches in the pool round, the semi-finals took place, with Redlands taking on St Mark’s and Five Lanes facing on New Forest.

In the final, Five Lanes proved too strong for Redlands and were crowned champions.

Kerry Brooks, Avon and Wiltshire’s netball development officer from England Netball, said: “It was a pleasure to have the schools there competing and a great sight to look around the courts and see all the teams putting in 100 per cent effort.

“A big thank you to the young leaders, teachers, umpires and parents that made the day a success – we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Earlier in the month, St Johns Academy retained their title by winning the overall championship at the gymnastics county finals held at the Wiltshire School of Gymnastics.

Avon Valley College, Hardenhuish and Sheldon took the gold medals in the Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced categories, and Sheldon were narrowly beaten by Kingdown in a very close trampoline competition.

The Mead won their first School Games trophy, beating St Marks and All Cannings to become primary gymnastics champions.
