SWINDON’S only 18-hole footgolf course is hosting the county’s first footgolf tournament later this month, with £100 up for grabs for the winner.

Footgolf, a hybrid sport of golf and football, has taken the UK by storm in recent years, and continues to grow in popularity with adults and children alike.

Bassett Down Golf Complex opened up a nine-hole crazy footgolf and 18-hole footgolf course last May, after expanding from 12-holes the previous year due to growing demand.

Similar to golf, the aim of the game is to kick a football from a tee into a large hole on a green, in the least amount of kicks possible.

Taking place over 18-holes, the tournament at Bassett Down takes place on Sunday, June 30.

Entrants will play in groups of four, with the player with the lowest score at the end of the day declared the winner.

The tournament’s lead sponsor, Marlborough-based company Earthline Ltd, is contributing a £100 cash prize and trophy for the winner.

The runner-up will receive £60 with £40 on offer for the third-placed finisher as well as spot prizes on the day for longest drive and nearest-the-pin challenges.

Basset Down Golf Complex assistant manager Rosie Nutland, said: “Footgolf continues to be a really popular activity for groups of family and friends who are looking for something different to do in Wiltshire.

“Last summer, we had lots of people asking if we would consider running an event as they enjoyed playing our course but wanted to play against other people in a slightly more competitive setting.

“The beauty of footgolf is that you don’t have to be an expert footballer or golfer to play; it really is a game for all abilities.

“We also want the tournament to help break down the boundaries and assumptions about golf courses. Even though we have a separate nine-hole golf course, we’re also an open and inclusive club, where everyone is welcome in our clubhouse, whether you’re a golfer or not.”

The tournament takes place on Sunday, June 30 and gets under way at 4pm.

Entry is £15 per person, which also includes a free burger and chips to enjoy after your round while the scores are being calculated.

Players must enter in advance to take part, which can be done by visiting: http://swindonfamilygolf.com/footgolf-tournament.php. Simply fill out the online entry form, and then pay your entry fee either over the phone or directly in the clubhouse.

The deadline for entries is June 24, and spaces will be given on a first come, first served basis.
