CYCLING

TEENAGER Sam Redding, from the GWR Team, rounded off the most successful week in the team's history since its formation two years ago, when he claimed a stunning first win in GWR colours, their fifth victory in just seven days.

Redding's fantastic win came in the mid-week Portsmouth DH cyclesport league.

Racing at the Mountbatten track, where he has already racked up a string of top five placings this summer, he came out on top after 52kms of the multiple circuit race.

Held over a short 1.5km circuit and consisting of just over one hour of fast and furious racing, Redding attacked the bunch as soon as the starter dropped his flag, creating a sizable gap that was pulled back after two laps.

When the junction was made, Redding increased his speed, going clear with one other rider.

Both set about putting some distance between themselves and the peloton, which would see them both lap the field by the time the race reached mid distance.

Deciding not to settle for lapping the field just once, Redding attacked again, going clear with five other riders managing to take two laps out of the rest of the field.

He completed an excellent evening in the saddle by winning the sprint against his fellow breakaway partner, to take his first victory.
