ANDY Turnell’s Broad Hinton yard was rocked on Saturday by the tragic death of Marching Song.

Turnell’s star horse was one of those who died suddenly in the paddock ahead of the first race on the Newbury card at the weekend.

An investigation is ongoing at the Berkshire course in an effort to determine how Marching Song and Fenix Two lost their lives, with electrocution believed to be the most feasible reason.

The trainer said: “He was one of my best horses.

“I was about to leg jockey Nick Schofield when he started freaking out. I was devastated.”

Marching Song was due to run in the colours of three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate and is part owned by owner Jim Lewis’ wife Jennifer with former champion jump jockey Graham Thorner, who said: “I was very fond of him and I think he had great potential.”

The meeting was abandoned after a single race.
