WILTSHIRE finished second behind Dorset at the South West Counties U16 and 14 Championship at The Kendleshire Golf Club near Bristol.

Upavon’s Tom Scullion carded a 76 to be crowned the regional U14 champion, with Manor House’s Josh Grobler returning the third best gross score of the day (73) to claim third place in the U16 event.

Team-mate Oliver Jeans (Wrag Barn) picked up the best U16 nett prize for his 70, while Broome Manor’s Ben Wakely was third in the U14 nett event.

County boys champion Joe Retford (Cumberwell Park) carded a 78, while there were solid performances from Freddie Titcombe (Broome Manor) and the Tidworth duo of Harry Moule and Max Wrixon as well as junior championship debutant Rory Cameron (Upavon).

  • WILTSHIRE Boys will embark on their defence of the national county championship title next month.

The team, managed by Ian Welding and coached by John Jacobs, won the title by half a point from Yorkshire at Cumberwell Park Golf Club near Bradford on Avon last August and start their qualifying campaign with the South West qualifier at Came Down Golf Club in Dorset on Wednesday, July 5.

A team of six will play 36 holes of scratch matchplay, with the winning team progressing with the North, South West and Midlands winners to Northamptonshire GC on August 29-31.
