Royal Wootton Bassett beaten by late Chippenham kick in South West One East

Chris Patterson’s try and three penalties from Tom Fieldsend had given Bassett at two-point lead at Allington Fields as the clock ticked into the red.

However, the visitors coughed up a penalty, and Alcorn kept his cool to split the posts and snatch the win for Chippenham.

Alcorn had early scored a try and conversion, with the home side’s points tally completed by Charlie Palmer’s try.

The defeat was a third in a row for Bassett, although coach Alan Low felt it was not all doom and gloom for his side.

“It was disappointing to lose with the last kick of the game,” said Low.

“We gave a penalty away out wide, which would have been quite difficult in the wind, but playing the advantage, we then gave away another penalty.

“That one was in the middle of the park and much more kickable. The lad stepped up and slotted it to win the game.

“We were frustrating but with the injury list we have and the guys that were out on the pitch, there was some really good learning for them.

“We had a lot of possession but we weren’t accurate enough with it. We felt we should have had a couple of other scores and we gave the ball away cheaply too.

“It was a tough day at the office, as local derbies always are, but it wasn’t too bad.

“There’s some learning to do and plenty to take away from the game.”

Elsewhere, Swindon can no longer mathematically climb out of the bottom three before the end of the season after going down to a 49-17 defeat at Wimborne, so the threat of relegation increases.

The Greenbridge Road side are 22 points below fourth-from-bottom Trowbridge, with only 20 points left available over the final four rounds of fixtures.

Swindon College Old Boys claimed a first Southern Counties South win since mid-January when they comfortably beat bottom side Bradford on Avon 43-12 at home.

Finally, Supermarine’s winless season in Dorset & Wilts One North stretched to a 19th game when they fell 36-7 at home to Avonvale.
