Swindon College cruised into the final of the Dorset & Wilts Plate with a 39-15 win over East Dorset.

It will be the first time the Old Boys have had a chance of putting some silver in the cupboard since they took on Bournemouth in the Dorset & Wilts vase final five years ago.

Other landmarks in the game saw a first try for winger Dan Bastin in a first team shirt and a 14-point haul for centre Greig O'Brien which puts him well over the 100 point tally for the season so far.

The College were under no illusions going into this semi-final as East Dorset who had changed their name from Portcastrians were regular rivals when both teams were in Southern Counties.

After falling 5-0 behind to an unconverted try, Old Boys promptly replied with flanker Luke Wills levelling the scores after some slick interplay between centres O'Brien and Neil White who created the space for Steve Offord to crash through the defence and slip a pass into the midriff of fellow back row Wills.

A penalty restored East Dorset's lead and the visitors looked like taking command until the Swindon side won a scrum on the Dorset five metre line and expertly walked the opposing scrum over their own try line.

It was left to No 8 Woody Briggs to pick his moment and put downward pressure on the ball, O'Brien claimed his first two points of the day by kicking the conversion and he added a further three to his tally with a penalty in the dying seconds of the first half.

Prop Paul Lawler was replaced by Nigel Clark and scrum-half Norman made way for Scott Taylor at the break.

The fresh legs boosted the Old Boys challenge as they quickly scored two converted tries, firstly through O'Brien who smashed a hole in the centre of the defence and refused to be dragged down until he was over the line.

The second was from stand off Williams, selling a wonderful dummy to his opposite number then ghosting between the centres leaving them looking at and blaming each other. This gave the home side a comfortable 29-8 lead.

Dorset managed to pull back seven points with a converted try but the College forwards continued to control the game and were rewarded when they drove a maul 10 metres before crashing over the opposing line, when the bodies were peeled away it was Clark who had smothered the ball. An unfortunate clash with 10 minutes to go saw O'Brien leave the field with a reoccurrence of an old shoulder injury and Matt Smith make his debut for the first team.

Bastin then beat two defenders for his first and the Old Boys' sixth try of the day.
