As is apparent due to media coverage, older drivers, generally over 70, are being subjected to scrutiny as to whether they should be retested, advised to stop driving, not mentally capable etc, which is leading to varying opinions from the general public.

There are many problems with younger drivers whose reactions are quicker but fast reactions are not the same as the correct response, therefore the anticipation, observation and planning often go awry!

As a Road Safety Practitioner and Advanced Driver with RoSPA, (Retested every three years), and the Institute of Advanced Motorists, plus being an Advanced Tutor, I have to say that association gives me the option to be assessed on a regular basis. At the age of 73, I am an older driver!

The Letters page is not the place for an advertisement but if a mention is possible it may help many older drivers and their families.

The Swindon Group of Advanced Motorists meet on the first Wednesday of each month at Blunsdon House Hotel at 730pm.

Can I suggest if anyone, older or otherwise, would like a free assessment of their driving, we can help. Any family member can come along and talk to us about their concerns and accompany us on the drive if they so desire.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists offer a series of modules that can help with guidance on various topics, like motorways, lone driver, parking and manoeuvring, technology in the car and winter driving.

Wiltshire Council run a programme called SAGE, (Safer Driving with Age), but there is a charge for the assessment.

All of this can help, as we can advise on the methods to keep you safe and assist in obtaining some additional aids to your vehicle which could make life easier. If you have a neck problem, then extra mirrors may help. A steering wheel attachment to assist with steering is also available. A change of vehicle, if affordable, could be better for you.

There can be occupational therapists available to assist in keeping you mobile because you do not have to give up and lose your independence.

Different areas run different schemes but we must get that information out there, even if it is through the letters page.

We really can help, but if you have to give up, there are various organisations that can help with transport in varying degrees. In fact, the money you save on running a car can be used for taxis. Inconvenient I know, but the total cost can be cheaper than running your car.

So, if you or your family have any concerns, contact Wiltshire Council or come along to Blunsdon House Hotel for a chat. Even give me a call as I can guide you through your options. (Even have a drive out with me if you’re not too scared). That applies to the media as well.
