Fishing problems

STEVE Halden recently took advantage of your letters page to share with us his vision of the UK fishing industry post Brexit.

First he posited that Britain would exclude all the “Johnny Foreigners” from our territorial waters.

Then, once stocks were restored to sustainable levels, he expects our fleet to be able to meet all our domestic needs, as well as build a strong export trade.

There was no mention of international agreements or quotas, so either he thinks our territorial waters will be sufficiently productive to sustain catches of this magnitude or he envisages simply plundering fish from elsewhere to make up the shortfall.

The latter would, at least, attract much opprobrium from countries with whom we hope to build trading relationships.

Finally, marine scientists are warning us that cod and herring off the coast of Scotland are already nearing the limit of their water temperature tolerance.

If the predicted further temperature rises materialise then they will simply move further north out of the Scottish fishing grounds.

Tories have messed up

INTEREST rates have risen for the first time in a decade. This means an increase in mortgage payments for some of the population.

This is probably just the start of a succession of increases that will squeeze mortgage owners.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid says that the current housing system isn’t working and is one of the greatest barriers to progress in Britain today.

To combat this, the Conservatives have pledged to finally build the quantity of the homes that should have been built already.

Better late than never?

Both actions are expected to have an adverse effect on house prices.

This means that that a vast quantity of people face having negative equity and increasing mortgage payments.

It has taken the Conservatives a long time to mess up the housing market but it looks like they have finally made a start.

It seems as if their timing is perfect, as they can dump the problem on to a new government when they are voted out at the next election.

Ash scatter disgust

I WAS disgusted to see that Moors Murder Ian Brady’s ashes were disposed of at sea.

What a waste of resources for the boat, crew, officials etc, when it would have been more appropriate to dispose of the ashes on the local tip, even though that would have been too good for him. The local sewer should have been considered.
