MANY people in this area support the RNIB campaign to allow people with severe sight loss to claim the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance. Soon MPs from all parties will be trying to amend the law to allow this.

I have written to my MP Mr Michael Wills to ask him to vote in support of the amendment of the Welfare Reform Bill. This will be the first chance that MPs have had to vote on this issue.

Opposition parties have indicated that they would support a move by the Government to end blind people’s exclusion from this important benefit. The Minister for Disabled People stated in a speech to a lobby of Parliament by blind people on October 15, 2008 that it is now a matter for Government to decide how and when this change can be made.

The Government has worked out how to make the changes, who would benefit and that it would cost only £45m. So, now is the time. It is time for the Government to do the right thing and for our MP to support the people with severe sight loss living in our area. I urge to anyone who supports this issue to contact their MP to ask them to vote for change, to vote for people with severe sight loss. For more information contact RNIB on 020 7391 2123.
