I HAVE just finished reading the full report of the Audit Commission report on the service provided by Swindon Borough Council’s Benefit Service. The full report can be found on the Audit Commission’s website at www.audit-commission.gov.uk/authority.asp. Can I urge all your readers who have access to the net to have a look at the full report. If you feel like me that it is not good enough that at a time of increased demand on this service it is described as “the worst performing council in England for accuracy” could you contact your local councillors and ask them what they are doing to improve the situation.

Sadly the poor performance described in the report is not new - members of the public and advice agencies have been complaining about the timeliness and accuracy of the service for a number of years. Unfortunately they have not been listened to. The result has been that individuals do not get benefits to which they are entitled and on occasions they get into arrears through no fault of their own. This then creates a situation where individuals find it very difficult to get their finances back on track. When you are at a low ebb this is the last thing you need.

It is important that the service improves and improves fast. With the rising tide of unemployment more and more people are likely to need the benefit’s service over the months ahead. They have a right to a much better service that the borough is now providing. I hope the Advertiser is able to get hold of a copy of the Action Plan the borough has to prepare to improve matters and helps hold it to account to deliver the level of service the people of Swindon deserve and need.
