Pupils’ politeness is singled out in report

PUPILS at Brook Field Primary School impressed Ofsted inspectors when they visited last month.

The school in Shaw received a glowing report from the inspectorate, as they were judged to be good in every category, with the pupils noted as being outstanding.

In a summary of the report, the inspectors wrote: “Pupils make good progress and by the time they leave the school the standards they reach are well above national averages. Teaching is good and some is outstanding.

“Teachers mark work carefully so that pupils are confident about how they can do even better next time.

“Great care is taken to make sure pupils’ individual needs are met, whether these are to do with their work or their welfare. Pupils love coming to school because they learn interesting things in imaginative ways.

“Teaching assistants are skilled and provide high quality support for pupils of all abilities. Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary. Pupils are always polite and look after each other and the school exceptionally well.

“Leaders, including governors, have high aspirations for the future success of the school and are doing the right things to ensure the school continues to improve.”

The framework for school inspections was changed last year, leaving a number of schools around the town finding reports not quite reflecting the work they do.

But Brook Field headteacher Dan Clarke said the report was welcome, considering the current climate.

“Under the current criteria and general guidance and framework for inspections, this is the result we were expecting,” he said.

“Our children do leave significantly above age-related expectations. In terms of their numeracy, maths and English, they achieve well above the national average.

“It is the pupils’ learning and behaviour and eagerness to participate. They are always wanting to learn, and that is due to the creativity and enrichment of the curriculum staff have provided.

“Not only that, it is their basic general behaviour and high expectations we place on them. We expect older children to act as role models for the younger pupils, and they do that very well.”

Dan said he believed the school should have been judged outstanding.

He said: “We set high standards for ourselves, and we work together as a team continually. We have brilliant teachers here and some fantastic teaching assistants.

“We are extremely proud of the report, and it reflects really well what we do at the school.”
