EVEN Swindon Primary School is celebrating after achieving its best Ofsted rating yet for its last inspection.

In November, the education watchdog visited the school in Pasture Close, which opened nine years ago, and rated it good in the report, which was published yesterday.

Not only was this a huge improvement on the last inspection in February 2013, when the school was told it needed to make significant improvements, but it is also the first time the school has ever been rated good.

Alison Lowe, headteacher at Even Swindon, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the report.

“It was a well deserved result and a ratification of two years of work that everyone has put in.

“Staff, governors, children and parents have all worked very hard to try and make improvements during that time and it’s great to see that we do now have a good school that serves the local community.”

Inspectors particularly praised school leaders’ efforts to improve teaching and achievement, and also the strong relationships between staff and their pupils.

In the report, inspectors said: “The headteacher’s relentless determination has been pivotal in rapidly improving teaching and achievement across the school.

“Strong relationships exist between all adults and pupils, leading to positive attitudes, good conduct and mutual respect.

“Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is effectively supported by an engaging and stimulating curriculum.

“High quality displays and artwork are used to celebrate the rich culture, diversity and history of the school.

“All adults place a high priority on maintaining very good behaviour and safety.

“Pupils feel happy and cared for as a result.”

Despite the overwhelming amount of praise heaped on the school, Ofsted did highlight some areas for improvement, including children's’ attainment in mathematics, marking, and the attainment of the school’s most able pupils.

But Alison revealed steps had already been put in place to meet these recommendations and continue to improve towards an outstanding school.

She said: “We were already aware of the issues that were raised and had already put in our own improvement plan that we needed to improve maths and the achievements of our most able pupils.

“We are putting in place a number of measures in order to meet those requirements and continue to improve towards being outstanding.”
