Bus firm forced to increase its fares

INCREASING costs have resulted in a rise in bus fares for Thamesdown Transport.

The company will introduce the price rises on Sunday, April 27.

The increase will bring them in line with rival company Stagecoach’s prices.

Single fares will go up by 10p to £1.40 for one zone and £2 for two zones and an adult Dayrider will increase by 10p to £3.70. A child single will also increase by 10p to £1.30 and a Family Dayrider by 10p to £6.70.

It is good news however for those who travel on evening services, with the introduction of a new Eveningrider Plus ticket. All passengers, including children, will be able to buy an evening’s unlimited travel in and around Swindon after 7pm for £2.50.

The prices for adult Travelpass tickets within the Swindon area will remain unchanged. The Young Persons’ Travelpass will increase by £2 to £37, and the Travelpass Plus version by £3 to £43.

The popular weekend and school holiday ‘Family for a Fiver’ fare, where a family of two adults and up to three children can make unlimited travel within the Swindon urban area for a day, will remain as it is. Paul Jenkins, managing director of Thamesdown Transport, said: “Unfortunately, due to rising costs we have to increase many of our fares. “Putting up fares is never a decision we take lightly and we have tried to minimise the increases where possible. “We have frozen our adult Swindon Travelpass rates in the urban area and retained our ‘Family for a Fiver’ special weekend and holiday fare, whilst our new Eveningrider Plus ticket will make bus travel easier after 7pm.”

More information on Thamesdown’s fares can be found at www.thamesdownbus.com, on the buses and from the Thamesdown Travel Shop on Fleming Way.

Last few years they blamed fuel increases for price increases, what's the excuse this year where prices have gone down?

Yes they are just a bunch of crooks and oh how wonderful their evening ticket . But how many services are there in the evening ? How late do they go? Not late enough to enjoy it and certainly not good enough if you are going out for a late drink ?? !!

What increasing costs? Coming from London where it's a flat £1.50 whatever the distance and no zones don't see why a small place like Swindon needs an inner zone and outer zone. £2 to travel from one zone into another. Rip off.

It's certainly not going to encourage people on the buses. I now use a bike for work and car the rest of the time. Fuel and car parking for an hour's shopping trip into town = @£2.50 vs what will now be £7.40 for 2 x Dayrider for myself and Mrs Warrior. The car is depreciating whether I use it or not. About the only time I might use the bus is going to the GWH.

Bus travel in Swindon is not that pleasant an experience anyway - hard to avoid the Scanias with hardly any seats and usually full of yobs or people who can't keep off their cellphones on a 10 minute journey.

They do this every year regardless of fuel costs. I don't understand it - they invest in new, fuel efficient buses which so say use X% less fuel, more eco friendly blah blah blah yet they seem to forever suffer increased running costs - how?

It seems there's 3 things guaranteed in life. Death, taxes and Thamesdown increasing their fares.

I believe the buses are leased these days , but no they have'nt really got a leg to stand on. The price of fuel is cheaper it's food and clothing that's going up.
The first company I saw using the no change system was Cardiff when I visited my brother at University there many years ago . I was lucky I had the right money !

You have to be joking. Last year they ripped off Joe Public £58,000 in overpaid fares buy putting the prices up whereby most people did not have the exact change (£1.30) but usually had £1.40 / £1.50). So they want to rip Joe Public off even more. I assume this is to cover the loss of the grant to maintain the over 60's free bus passes.

The fares are a rip off anyway ... £1.30 to travel less than 1/4 mile. Grrr. my friend who struggles to walk more than 20 yards and desperately needs the buses to travel just 1 or 2 stops has to pay £2.60 to visit a doctor and has been refused a pass as he can walk.

Wake up thamesdown rip off transport. Smell the coffee. the more you put up the fares the less the service gets used.

I am fed up of these people increasing fares all the time, no wonder the man has a big grin all over his face in the picture, laughing all the way to the bank, the service is shoddy at best and thats if they actually can be bothered to run a full service anyway. it now costs just under £40 to send my Grandson to school each month he lives with me but has to commute out to West Swindon. These peole should hang their heads in shame especially when my Grandson actually bothers to go to school, I bet their families dont have to struggle with buses.!!!!!!!!!!!

so where are we up to, higher fares, year on year, less busses, more money being spent on a over the top bus facility in the town centre, barely used bus lanes, the public are not being taken for a ride because there are insufficient busses on the road running at times that suit the bus company , if they want people out of their cars, surely the prices need to fall massively, services run to every part of the area without discrimination, **** it I've lapsed into a dream again ! ( PS why do bus managers need company cars if their service is up to scratch)

They make thousands from their "no change" policy, where does that money go and as for their after 7pm evening service I''ve not seen a Thamesdown bus go up or down Kingshill for years. And they say they service all parts of Swindon, its a joke.
