AROUND 30 people have crowded outside the Civic Offices in the town centre to protest that former Mayor Nick Martin resign from his post as councillor.
Members of the Swindon People’s Assembly and representatives from all political parties joined the crowd following the news that Coun Martin (Con, Shaw) would step down from mayoral office in the wake of the scandal over derogatory remarks about people with disabilities.
Sean Wilson, one of the protestors who turned out, said: “We were planning to protest for the mayor to resign but after he resigned we thought we would protest for him to resign as councillor as well.”
Coun Martin resigned this morning after intense pressure after he was asked to apologise for remarks he made at a meeting last year following a standards committee investigation.
In the meeting overheard by several other councillors, he said: “Are we still letting those Mongols have sex with each other?”
