CATHERINE Wayte Primary School in Swindon are one step away from the national final of a prestigious competition headed up by legendary player Zinedine Zidane.

The north Swindon school have successfully progressed from the county rounds of the tournament, the biggest in the world for 10-12-year-olds, and will now compete in the regional finals which will be held next month.

More than 3,000 schools from across the country entered the tournament, which involves more than 2.5million children worldwide, and Catherine Wayte will now take on eight other schools from the south west on March 22 at South Glos and Stroud College.

Former Juventus, Real Madrid and France midfielder Zidane is the event’s ambassador while former Liverpool, Tottenham and England defender John Scales heading things up in this country, and is proud to have played a part in the event.

“I am so proud to have so closely supported the Danone Nations Cup for almost 10 years now,” he said. “It’s a truly remarkable project that brings joy to thousands of kids nationally.

“Being active, eating well, having fun and working hard as part of a team are fundamental pillars of influencing the many that participate.”

If Catherine Wayte are successful in the south west final they will take on the best teams England has to offer at a top FA venue, from which the winners will travel to Brazil in October to represent their country.”
