Carlin picks up a silver in Glasgow

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon swimmer Jazz Carlin Swindon swimmer Jazz Carlin

SWINDON’S Jazz Carlin won silver in the 200m freestyle last night in what she hopes will be the first of three finals at this year’s British Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

The Swansea University student and Swindon Tigershark came second in 1:57 behind Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, the Bath swimmer beating her own personal best and achieving the Commonwealth Games qualification time to pip Carlin by one hundredth of a second.

O’Connor, normally known as a backstroke swimmer, has emerged as a rival in the freestyle and the two could battle it out again as Carlin competes for Wales and O’Connor for England in the summer.

Carlin will now move on to Sunday’s 800m freestyle with hopes of going one better. The Swindon swimmer stated before the meet that she would use these championships as a rehearsal for the summer and her battle with O’Connor could well be a preview of what is to come.

Former Swindon Dolphin Tilly Gray also did enough to qualify for tonight’s final of the 100m butterfly as finished fourth in her semi-final last night with a time of 1.00.01. Gray’s time makes her the seventh fastest of the qualifiers that go in the final that takes places in the evening session.
