Swindon Town boss urges fans to 'stick' with his young side

Swindon Advertiser: A Swindon Town fan shows his frustration at Gillingham on Saturday A Swindon Town fan shows his frustration at Gillingham on Saturday

SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper has asked the club’s fans to continue to stick by his young side despite their poor form away from home.

Town’s latest defeat on the road, to Gillingham on Saturday, left the Robins five points off the League One play-offs even though Swindon boast the second best home record in the division.

Cooper persisted with the suggestion that Town’s youthfulness worked against them in their meek performance at the Priestfield Stadium and pleaded to supporters to keep on backing his players as they look to bridge the gap to the top six in the coming weeks.

“Somebody criticised me for my team talk on Tuesday night, saying there was no reaction. There was a reaction tonight for the second half, which was a plus. I understand the supporters will be frustrated but they’ve got to stick with us because we have got a lot of young players who are trying to learn how to play football,” Cooper said.

“That’s the way we’ve got to go at the minute. They’re learning, they’re trying their best and it is frustrating for all of us but we’ll get there in the end.

“It’s difficult and I feel for them and it’s frustrating, I understand that, but please stick with us.

“It’s going to be a long process but we’ll get there in the end if they stick with us.

“There was one or two who need to up their game, it doesn’t take much working out, people who saw the game will know.

“We just tried to tweak a few things and be tidier on the ball in midfield and calm and that would lead to chances.

“Little George Barker had a couple of really good chances and if one of them goes in it’s game on again.”

Mr Cooper you can't keep blaming the young players.. Maybe your to blame.
At this rate Power will take over as manager and we will be another Rushden.
I thought it was bad under Jedi but this is worse.
Come back Mr Fitton all is forgiven.

The fan at the front is particularly critical at away games. I don't know who he is but seems to be among the most fiercest critic of the young players. It's up to him what his own actions are!

The main issue is he has a few options but so far has not chosen to use them!
.
OK they are young and learning - so why not put the older heads in?
.
Mason has been off his game for a few weeks and was nowhere to be seen at HOME to Posh - so drop him to the bench and bring in Harley - the older more expereinced player
.
N'Guessan has been around the block - so why is he on the bench? Couldn't he come in alongside Ranger? Having 2 up would have given the defenders something different to think about!
.
Alternatively try a different youngster in a different style - L Thompson is probably the most defensice so stick him in in front of the back 4!
.
Then choose one from Luongo or Kassim for the box-to box role
.
At the back Branco has come in and done well in a back 4 so drop Hall for a few games to see if we start to pick up
.
Otherwise it will turn out liike the end of the Wilson era - where he stuck to the same 11 every game and wondered why we got the same result every game!
.
Fodders
Thompson Branco Ward McEverley
Thomson Kassim
Harley
N'Gussan Ranger
.
Belford, Hall, Byrne, Mason, Pritchard, Luongo, Barker/Storey
.
Only a few tweaks but suddenly a very different team with lots of options from the bench to tighten things up or really go for it

I do admire your confidence in your selection London Red, but we haven't been winning away matches with 11 players so to go in with only 10 seems a bit gung-ho.

Spotted that myself :-)

Would love to see someone else up front with Ranger - Storey would be a different kind of player but N'Guessan could definitely be worth a shot, scored a decent goal against Wolves and would have a better chance of holding the ball up than some of our more lightweight players.

LR - only thing I would say is that team looks very narrow - think we really need Pritchard in there somewhere as someone with some creativity. He needs protection from the other players though and someone close by to lay it off to. He can be a little terrier when chasing back and putting in a tackle but unless he's in a lot of space won't keep the ball too long as is too easily knocked off.

Would like to see Hall out of the side for a bit but won't happen as I'm sure the spurs lot would have something to say about it. Would also like Ward out for a bit as well but we don't have the backup in defence and aren't likely to get it, as there doesn't seem to be any news on a new defender coming in.

My team at the moment would be

Fods
N Thompson Ward Branco McEveley
Kasim Harley
Pritchard Byrne
Ranger Storey

Then again what do I know - if the attitude of the players isn't right then I guess it doesn't matter who's playing, the results just aren't going to come.

Would agree with that, Ranger/Storey up front gives a good balance of height and hold up play with pace and finishing ability.

They would be my choice too, but I think Storey has the Michael Owen problem of keeping fit.
