The first known inhabitants in the Covingham area were the Romans in 43AD. On the edge of the A419, it was an ideal place for a trading town. The area's kimeridge clay was a valuable natural resource for the Romans to make pots from. In 1964 an excavation uncovered a square enclosure with pottery including New Forest Samian Ware Pot, coins and many other items that can be viewed in the Swindon Museum in Bath Road. It is thought a villa stood in the area. If there is any information you would like to see included on this page, please contact us here. |
