I WENT along to Swindon’s community centre near Old Town, where there was a Penturners Tea Dance.
When we walked through the doors we could hear a band playing and someone singing. We walked through into the room where there was a live band which the Penturners put together themselves and others of them dancing around the hall in pairs.
We spoke to the man who created the Penturners Tea Dance, George Connell, as he put the whole idea together as something for older people to enjoy.
We also spoke to two ladies who go to the Penturners Tea Dance, one of whom said how when they lost their husband they started to go to the dance to meet people so she wasn’t on her own and had something to do.
The other lady said they need more men because there are too many ladies there.
After a couple of songs they all stopped to have a rest and a chat with a cup of tea and biscuits. It was a friendly place to be, full of laughter and enjoyment from all who was there. They also had a raffle for everyone to take part in.
After the raffle the band started up again and carried on playing whilst everyone was dancing. George runs a tea dance every week on a Monday. Everyone we spoke to said they had a lovely time.
