This selection of images from our archive shows Cricklade between the 1860s and the 1980s.
If anybody can put a name to the lawn game being played in the 1865 image we'd be very happy to hear from them.
It appears to be similar to croquet, but with long poles instead of mallets, and balls which seem to be the size of modern crown green bowls.
