Stylist Shan Williams offers her tips on choosing your autumn tights

As the owner of probably the whitest legs in Wiltshire, I dread dressing in the summer.

Tanning creams involve a lot of maintenance, with exfoliating, rubbing in the cream evenly etc– it’s an impossible task, getting the colour just right so you don’t look too orange or too brown or too streaky.

On a recent trip to Cannes, I did invest in a spray tan which always makes me feel confident. I love looking down at those brown legs for five days while the tan lasts. I can wear a skirt or dress without being conscious of my white legs, and achieve a chic rather than geek look, along with the best of the French ladies walking along the Croissette!

Where is she going with this, I hear you ask? Well, I am one of the people who is always pleased to see autumn, because I can start wearing tights again and banish those white legs for another six months.

Tights are the basic underpinning to your winter wardrobe and a crucial link for everyday dressing – the right tights can make an outfit. While the catwalks may not favour tights, we know better. So what lies beneath is ultra important!

There’s never been more choice on the internet, with whole websites devoted to tights. Thought dressing your bottom half was simple? Think again: here’s the science behind covering your legs this season.

l bright tights – choose a colour that works with another element or colour of your outfit. If you are not sure you are brave enough to wear these then save them for aerobics.

l sheer tights – sheer denier tights are more subtle. Pair with pretty flats and a cosy coat. Lengthen your legs by toning your hosiery with your hem line and shoes. Nearly black should be a wardrobe staple for formal work wear.

l Opaque tights – don’t stick to just black, choose teal or Bordeaux for a creative look. Bear in mind they make your legs look thinner so if your legs are on the slim side, stick to a sheer.

l embellished tights – the perfect update for your LBD. Add some bling!

l animal print tights – the key here is simplicity, wear with chic neutrals. Never do double animal print!

So, it’s hello tights, goodbye white legs! I love you legs, but wish you weren’t quite so white.
