Declan Kelly is holding an exhibition of his work at Swindon’s Central Library following a drawing project.

Declan joined the Artsite Experimental Drawing Hub, a three-month project based around the ideas of Freedom and Restriction, with the aim of producing work for a showcase at the end of the hub.

He created his own display of 12 pictures, inspired by the Easter theme, and called The Last Supper.

“I knew that the project would end around Easter so I thought a personal re-interpretation of the Last Supper might pull my work together,’’ said Declan.

Because he had to stick to the basic concepts of the course, the artist’s chosen restriction was to confine his subject to one of pots, bottles and vases, and his freedom was to create an image totally different from the style of his previous week’s work.

The Last Supper is an interpretation of the vessels brought to the table of that iconic meal and also a symbolic representation of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ.

“Drawing the 12 Apostles convincingly would have been beyond me,’’ said Declan. “Drawing 12 vessels has been relatively easy, but my chosen freedom proved to be quite a restriction. At least I was free from wondering what my next subject would be.’’ The idea behind the drawing project was to create various works for a joint exhibition, entitled Freedom and Restriction, at the Artsite Post Modern Art Gallery in Theatre Square from Monday, May 5 to May 10.

“The hub was great fun and offers a supportive environment,’’ said Declan. The hub meets once a week on a Saturday morning in Number Nine Gallery, Theatre Square, from 11am. Cost is £3.
