Do you cook a lot yourself? What is your failsafe dish?

Yes, we cook from scratch most days, but always have some good quality ready meals in the freezer. Quick and failsafe is gluten-free pasta with a tomato sauce. I often buy a basic, ready pasta sauce then add meat or vegetables to it.

Where do you like to eat out? How often?

We don’t eat out often, as it is difficult when you have coeliac disease and lactose intolerance too. We like to go to local gastro pubs on occasion, perhaps 4-5 times a year, and unless they have an extensive gluten free menu I usually end up with steak and salad.

What do you always hope to find on a menu? For starter? Main course? Dessert?

There are an increasing number of restaurants providing a good choice for those with food allergies and intolerances. Having a good quality gluten free bread offered is always great. Unfortunately this usually arrives after everyone has finished eating. For a starter I like to have a salad without croutons or creamy sauces but with good quality olive oil instead.

For main, it’s great to have a choice of gluten free pasta, pizza and fresh salad or vegetables. Dessert is tricky if you are both gluten and lactose intolerant. Usually the only choice is sorbet, which I don’t like. It’s always great to find gluten free brownies, cakes and dairy free ice cream or custard on the dessert menu – but this hardly ever happens.

Which foods did you hate as a child? Do you eat them now?

I hated everything with tomato and tomato sauce. I love them now and tomato sauce and soup is my son’s favourite too!

What is your favourite drink? Alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

I don’t drink much alcohol but when I do I like a good quality rose wine. Non-alcoholic: water, I try to drink lots!

Marmite: yes or no?

Yes!

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to food... something you know you shouldn’t eat, but do anyway?

Unfortunately you can’t really “cheat” when you have coeliac disease or food allergy so I don’t eat anything that contains gluten.

Guilty pleasure are homemade cakes that I bake, both gluten and lactose free but sweet, made with sugar although I’m trying to use alternative sweeteners such as agave syrup or honey.

You are on your own at home watching a film. What is you snack of choice?

Freshly popped popcorn or dark chocolate or custard made with coconut milk poured over frozen raspberries.

You’re eating a bacon sandwich... do you prefer ketchup, brown sauce or nothing at all?

A little mayonnaise.
