Shareen Campbell and Phil Saunter, owners of Los Gatos and Bistro Les Chats in Wood Street, and the Swindon Business People of the Year, talk about life in the restaurant business.

It might have slipped your attention, but apparently there’s going to be a general election later this year.

Politics and food are often intertwined in many ways. The Common Agricultural Policy and Common Fisheries Policies get a lot of attention and politicians love to jump on a bandwagon if they think it will win them a few votes. Closer to home, free school lunches and food banks have been hot topics.

So when it comes to putting your cross in a box on May 7 will food play any part in your decision?

Does a politician’s attitude to food say anything about their standards or values?

We were inspired to think about it this week when David Cameron proclaimed his preference for entertaining world leaders would be Nando’s chicken rather anything from TV and Michelin starred chef Gordon Ramsay.

Perhaps he was trying to save the taxpayer some money, or (more likely) hoping that he’ll be invited to visit them rather than them coming here!

If Ed Miliband was entertaining world dignitaries they might not fare much better.

Apart from the unfortunate incident with the bacon sandwich and his preferred quick snack of a tuna melt, his favourite meal is the good old Chicken Tikka Massala.

If he thinks declaring his favourite is going to be a popular vote winner, he may be a bit behind the times since CTM was pushed off the UK top spot by the traditional Sunday roast last year.

Nick Clegg is a fine fellow. A Spanish wife and a declared love of tapas. If only he’d insisted they were on the menu for his free school lunch initiative, it might have proved more popular with the kids.

Nick – if you win – we’ll be happy to entertain your visitors at England’s favourite tapas venue... whereas if that UKIP guy gets in, we’re off to Europe.

As for us, well our politics, like our food, are of the people. We prefer Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. As Karl Marx once said, “Nothing but the best is good enough for the workers!”
