Reece Chaplin tucks in to a meaty treat at the popular Old Town restaurant Kenzo 72

Kenzo is a name that is usually connected with top of the range fashion but in Swindon it can also be associated with top-class food.

Kenzo 72 Lounge Bar and Kitchen is a place I have had on my dining out radar for a while now after hearing so many positive comments about the restaurant, and every time I have tried to book in before I have always struggled as it is so popular.

The location in Godwin Court, Old Town, is quite a swanky part of the town, so I would recommend dressing up for the occasion.

I chose to visit during lunchtime, the place was quieter than I expected but I was greeted with a smile and some small talk as I was being walked to my seat. My first impressions were really good, it looked suave and intriguing from the outside and once inside the place really came to life, with the variety of colours and design.

It has an oriental theme that runs throughout, from its menus to its design decor. Close your eyes for a moment and you can imagine you were in Asia.

As I was seated, the waitress quickly took my drink order. I went for a coke (£2.99) with a slice of lemon as it was only noon - too early for an alcoholic tipple. But there is a good a selection of drinks covering cocktails, beers, spirits and wines.

When it came to ordering my food, the menu for lunch was combined with the steak menu. I couldn’t resist choosing the steak as I was prepped before going about the little twist they include.

Kenzo brings out volcanic hot stone for their grilled steaks, allowing you the chance to cook it to the tenderness preferred. I liked the idea as it meant I could try the steak cooked in a variety of ways from rare, medium rare or well done.

The hot stone was accompanied with a cube of butter and sprinkles of salt to spread on top before placing my food onto it. One thing that I was impressed by is the way I was guided in cooking my meat - it felt as though I was at a personal cooking class.

The dish I ordered was the Our Famous Fillet 72 Steak (£24.99) with mixed seasonal veg and sweet potato fries, and of course a red wine sauce to smoother it in.

The main course was exquisite, the crunch of the vegetables was just right with the sweetness of the fries creating a nice combination for the pallet palate. The steak was worth every penny, it was mouthwateringly good. I prefer to have mine cooked medium rare and it tasted delicious and was so succulent. The only disappointment was that it was not bigger!(There was a customer seated next to me who was tucking into the Cote De Boeuf which was a whopping 36 ounces. It costs £49).

The red wine sauce topped the meal off for me as it added an edge to the dish, especially when combined with the steak it was a match made in heaven - enough to have even Nigella Lawson cooing over.

A main dish with two side orders filled me up but thankfully did not leave me feeling like I was about to explode; it was nice to have a filling meal but not feel heavy after.

Although I did not have a starter, there is a very large selection available with a choice that would be able to suit most tastes and wallets.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the prices on the wine and cocktail menus, I normally expect restaurants to ask for extortionate prices but Kenzos was very reasonably priced with bottles costing as little as £15.90 and then anything upwards to £50.

Throughout my time at the restaurant I could feel a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and you could tell that this is a place that in the evening would come to life.

When speaking to the waitress regarding booking in over the weekend she informed me that I would need to book well in advance, so I would recommend booking a week or two in advance before going. It is well worth the wait.

Kenzo is also a fully licensed bar until the early hours and they have a separate lounge and supply a DJ to set the tone of the night.

If you are in the Old Town area and want to eat at a place that has a good range on the menu to choose from, with a variety of drinks available, then I would have to say you need to experience this restaurant. You will find it difficult to find a better place for a steak in this town.
