The Wessex Male Choir is having its big Christmas concert at the Swindon MECA on Thursday.

The concert will also feature music from Swindon's Pegasus Brass, traditional songs performed by the Wessex Camerata, and carol singing.

The male choir will also be performing a brand new and lively arrangement of The Gloucestershire Wassail, also known as The Cricklade Wassail.

The arrangement has some fun at the expense of the second tenors, who end up singing snatches from several carols while the rest of the choir sings the wassail.

Among the other items on the programme, the Wessex Camerata will be performing the beautiful German advent carol Es Ist Ein Ros’ Entsprungen, which dates from about 1599, so hearing it performed live in the UK will be a rare Christmas treat.

This is the first time that the concert is being held at the MECA, and it's not the only first that the concert will boast.

Guy Edwards, one of the choir’s management team, said: "As far as we know, it’ll be the first time we have included a Hanukkah song in our Christmas concert.

"It’s a great song that’s sure to get the feet tapping.

"Admittedly it’s slightly late as the concert is on Thursday 21st and Hanukkah finishes on the 20th..."

Tickets cost £12.50 and are available on the door, or from the Central Library, or online via www.ticketsource.co.uk/wessex-male-choir
