YUSUF/CAT STEVENS Tell ’Em I’m Gone Having become a Muslim in 1978, and adopted the name Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens retired from popular music for over three decades, despite having been one of Britain’s most successful singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s, with hits like Father And Son and Morning Has Broken.
He made a surprise return in 2006 with the critically acclaimed An Other Cup and 2009’s Roadsinger.
Tell ’Em I’m Gone is undoubtedly the best of his albums since his 70s heyday, matching the likes of Teaser And The Firecat and Tea For The Tillerman. It really is that good. Five of the 10 tracks are originals, with highlights being opener I Was Raised In Babylon, The Devil Came From Kansas, and Doors, proving that, even at 66, his voice has aged majestically. This is an album to treasure. 9/10 – Kim Mayo
