LITTLE BOOTS - WORKING GIRL

Shimmering electronics with sugary pop aren't often associated with concept records, though Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots' third outing, is a clear nod to her CEO status at Repeat Records and the modern working world. With such a strong premise, it's a shame that not all of Working Girl hits as hard, especially as the album's intro mimics a corporation's pre-record phone message, urging us to "make it happen!" To some degree the title track and Get Things Done, does just that, but elsewhere it's too easy to get lost in the hypnotic dark beats and glimmering production. This is especially noticeable on Real Girl as the 31-year-old singer leans heavier on the dance/house sides of things, relying solely on her icy vocals. However, buried near the end is perhaps her deepest and most sentimental offering to date. Despite the bouncy production, Help Too lays on the melancholy but sadly leaves listeners wishing it could all be this engaging. The references to office culture and equality are an exciting addition, especially when injected with Hesketh's sarcasm and charm, but there's far too many skippable tracks for Working Girl to stand proud against the rest of her back catalogue.
